How did you go trying "idle" instead of "standby"?

[following up on an icb conversation, in which i explained that
spinning down the disk was Wrong for the reboot case, and wondered
whether setting "idle" mode (regardless of what kind of reboot) was
enough to park the heads and avoid the need for an emergency retract]
