Hilight attribute does this.  It's not dim gray, it's bright black ;)

This sounds like a bug introduced when WS_DEFAULT_COLATTR,
WS_DEFAULT_MONOATTR, WS_DEFAULT_BG and WS_DEFAULT_FG options were
added - defattr passed to wsemul_vt100_init is not respected, check if
sun's emul doesn't as well.
