i'm confused.  it broke in some trees of mine, but is OK in others.
i wonder if there's a missing dependancy somewhere?

i was prepared to apply the revert-change to my tree used for GCC-12
testing, but after updating it works there, but two other trees i
have both fail without it reverted.  there's surely something odd
here, htodd@ also saw this problem with an entirely fresh check out.
