psshfs doesn't implement PUFFS_VN_PATHCONF and libpuffs does:

{  
 puffs_vnmsg_pathconf *auxt = auxbuf;
 if (pops->puffs_node_pathconf == NULL) {
  error = 0;
  break;
 }
...
}

So that's "success" with an undefined (?) result.

changing this to

  error = EINVAL;

should help.
