	Does an ls on the mounted filesystem work?

    If so you could try setting the read/write size to 1k

	mount -o -r=1024,-w=1024 remotehost:/remotedir /localdir

    or possibly try an nfs2 mount:

	mount -o -2,-r=1024,-w=1024 remotehost:/remotedir /localdir
