I phoned the local Maxim distributor in Australia and they very kindly sent
me two samples.  They've arrived this morning, and assuming they do the job
I'll be buying chips for the rest of my machines.

The moral is if you ask nicely...

You _might_ be able to get samples from Maxim;  they're willing to send
out many of their chips in onesy-twosy for free.  (Not all chips,
though, and I haven't checked about this one)
