I would concur with this observation and request.  That looks like ksh
construction, not sh construction (ksh scripters should be SHOT, btw, but
that's another pointer to function returning a pointer to an array of cans
of worms, POSIX notwithstanding).

        n = `expr $n + 1`
        unit=`expr $i : 'sd\(.*\)'`
