Network boot doesn't ever assume that the root filesystem is at the
start of an mbr partition, it always follows the disklabel.

I'd add some diag prints to boot1.c and rebuild bootxx_xxx.
IRRC you have putstr() and putint() available for output.
Could be something silly like it finds enough of a superblock
in one of the places it looks ....
