This should'nt be a problem. wd0 here really means "the first BIOS disk".
If you have no IDE then the first BIOS disk should be your SCSI disk.
Sure, this should be changed to "hd0" to avoid confusion.

It seems that either it can't load the kernel or the kernel binary was
corrupted.

What happens if you boot from floppy and tell "boot wd0a" at the boot prompt ?
You can also try to boot from floppy and try to reload/reextract the kern.tgz
set.
