I think the anserw is "yes". Do you have wdc1 enabled in your kernel ?
notebooks ususlly have disk on first controller and cdrom on second.
If this doesn't work, you shoud try with a kernel from the last sup.
I changed the controlled probe routine so that it will work with
some strange ATAPI drives.
