It's a bug in play (sox). Using the hdmi audio port doesn't work with the rpi4 either. Compiling it with oss support and setting the environment variables AUDIODRIVER=oss and AUDIODEV=/dev/audio works ok. So sunaudio.c (or patches) at fault here. adr
