Yes, that can happen.

My i386 systems dump reliable. But my SPARCstation LX never dumps. It
reports another error (IIRC another panic) while trying to dump and
reboots afterwards.

Yes, indeed. But if full automatic reboots are very important you can
still disable dumping.
