 I had same problem the other day. And the error message was unclear.
 Looking closer, I noticed that the library was never built in the first
 place. In my case, it was caused by not having libXpm available.
 
 I committed a small fix for x11/Xaw3d/Makefile to make sure it includes
 libXpm.
 
 Have you updated your pkgsrc recently? Or are you using stable pkgsrc?
 
 (I guess I should ask for this to be pulled up to pkgsrc-stable, other
 than I didn't rememeber to check if the problem is there.)
