HTTP is mainly suitable for download of single files only and not well for part or whole filesystems (i.e. easy mirroring or syncing) except you are using DAV which is another story... Most modern FTP clients i know are able to handle FTP / TLS properly and by default if offered by the server and FTP servers usually should configured to that. Another option beside is SFTP or SSH / SCP vs RSYNC etc..
