How do I change the boot chooser timeout? At boot my system displays
'NetBSD/i386 ffsv1 Primary Bootstrap' so I tried 'installboot -e -o
timeout=1 /usr/mdec/bootxx_ffsv1' but that doesn't change anything.

Use /dev/rwd0a as the target not the bootloader file itself. You are changing that file not the file system.

Also, is it possible to hide all the startup messages? I'm running NetBSD
4.0.

boot -z or even vesafb+splashscreen. I have patches to force boothowto in your kernel config file and to add boot.cfg support to 4.0
