I think I have already included this info when posting the original message, 
for your convenience, here is the rearranged copy (usbdevs output is first, 
followed by corresponding dmesg - in the original message it was the other 
way around)... also, iBook has two USB ports, so in the original message I 
might have plugged umass into a different hole - but the problem is the same 
- no matter which USB hole I plug the umass into:
