a) practical advice on how to provide more meaningful error messages,
because I have no idea what might be wrong, as it always works here.

b) practical advice how to avoid machine-type-related problems, which=20
my subconscious sends whenever somebody admits he changed the -m settings
of the Makefile.

You answered b), and your answer seems valid; but what about a) ?
