used DAT tape drives are very cheap (<300PLN<80$ in Poland for DDS-2).

i use DDS-1 at home with 20GB drive on which i use chflags nodump for
everything unimportant (/tmp, /var/tmp, /var/run, /var/spool/squid,
other dirs used to keep things i have already CDR'ed etc..), and
dump to backup.
