Sup seems to be the best way to update pkgsrc.  Have a look at
/usr/share/examples/supfiles.

Quick and dirty example:

# more /etc/supfiles/current-pkgsrc.sup

current release=pkgsrc host=sup.netbsd.org hostbase=/ftp/pub \
base=/usr prefix=/usr backup use-rel-suffix compress delete

# sup -v /etc/current-pkgsrc.sup
[...TV dinner here...]

# cd /usr/pkgsrc/what/ever ; make clean CLEANDEPENDS=YES; make install
# whatever -version
