 It does make the screen brightness keys work. Thank you very much for =
 that! It is not a complete fix though because plugging in and unplugging =
 the AC power cord still makes the screen brightness go to 100%. After =
 the power cord is plugged in or unplugged, sysctl =
 hw.acpi.acpiout0.brightness still reflects the brightness level set by =
 the screen brightness keys, however, and a subsequent press of the =
 screen brightness keys successfully changes the screen brightness to be =
 that indicated by the new sysctl value. That is, if I press the screen =
 brightness keys to set the brightness (and the sysctl) to a level of 55, =
 then if I unplug the AC power cord, the true brightness goes to 100 =
 while the sysctl still reports 55, and then if I press the screen =
 decrease brightness key once, the true brightness drops to a value of 50 =
 and the sysctl also reports 50.
 
 I tested it with an installation of the 202405110650Z daily of HEAD.=
