i'm now reminded of another problem. now, my biggest
problem with the patch is that it's forced upon anyone
 who sets DBG=-g, AFAICT.

that .a files are missing debuginfo is a problem i've had
a couple of times since switching from pure -g to MKDEBUG
builds, so, i don't really find that argument compelling.
ie, now i can't debug static programs.

if it wasn't for a different benefit i'd go back to the
pure -g solution, but there's an issue where files with
exec mappings end up having gigabytes of unused debug
 info in actual memory...

 .mrg.
