I've worked around the problem by installing another (ATAPI) CD-ROM, which
is much faster and more convenient (no caddy, bootable) anyway.  Adding it
back on the same controller would be laborious.  :-(

I can add it back on another controller, but its priority has gone down
significantly for me.  I'll let you know when I get around to it.
