Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong here ...

Here is the problem:

dusty {226} echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
/usr/X11R6/lib
dusty {227} echo $path
/users/dusty/bin /bin /usr/bin /usr/new /usr/games /usr/local /usr/old /usr/
X11R6/bin . /usr/X11R6/lib /usr/sbin /sbin
dusty {228} xterm
ld.so: xterm: libXaw.so.6.0: No such file or directory
dusty {229}

I can do the same thing with root (dusty is a "normal" user), except
that under root the xterm will start.

On a related not, I can startup X from root but Dusty cannot. I get
an error that I can't see 'cause my shutter speed is too slow :)
I think I see a " ...so ...." in there, though.
