Subject: can't gzip xwindow tar file

I downloaded a copy of X11R6.122094.tgz from cray-ymp (twice), and have
not been able to zinstall or tar it from inside the netBSD.

I get the same error at the same place (error message is slightly
different, but occurs at same place for I presume same reason.)

I type from unix cli:

"tar xzvpf X11R6.122094.tgz"

The file starts to decompress and spews out:

X11R6/
X11R6/LIB/
X11R6/LIB/CONF/
X11R6/LIB/CONF/Imake.rules

tar: skipping to next file header...

gzip: Stdin: invalid
compressed data -- format violated

tar child returned status1

What to do?

TIA,

Bud
