They are using a driver based on sources provided by Intel. And that
is source is apparently used for Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris and possibly
other Unix like operating system with as little modification as
possible. So you end up with a code which is unpleasant to read and
ignores most of the concepts of the target operating system.
