I don't know of a lot of these with working ethernet that don't
support either BOOTP or DHCP, but if you have one, I guess I can't
help you... :'}

If this happens to you a lot, why not port the ISC client to DOS?

The DHCP client is not a NetBSD thing - it's an Internet Software
Consortium thing that I'm also maintaining in the NetBSD tree.   If it
doesn't work on some flavour of Unix that you need it on, you'd be
doing a major public service if you'd get it working and send me the
patches.

Yeah, I know.... no time...   Sigh.   :'}
